South Sound Breast Center, a joint-venture between South Sound Radiology and Providence St. Peter Hospital, is excited to announce the installation of 3-D mammography. This new exam transforms how breast cancer is detected today by offering a superior mammogram for all breast types.

Schedule your 3-D mammogram today by calling 360.252.9301.

The most exciting advancement in mammography in more than 30 years

3-D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection. It uses unique computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers, building what is essentially a three-dimensional mammogram. This allows doctors to see breast tissue detail in a way never before possible to help find breast cancer at its earliest stages, when it is more treatable.

With 3-D mammograms, radiologists have the detailed information they need to identify breast cancer with greater certainty. That means there’s less of a chance you may need to be called back for additional views.

What to expect during your exam

3-D mammography is obtained similarly to standard 2-D digital mammography, and is approved for all women who would have conventional mammograms, in both the screening and diagnostic settings. No additional compression is required and it takes only a few more seconds for each view.

During the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images. Then, a computer produces a 3-D image of your breast tissues in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist. They will scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book for a transparent and comprehensive view. There is very low X-ray energy used during the exam, so your radiation exposure is below the FDA guidelines.

Whether it’s your first or fifth mammogram, scheduling your annual screening at South Sound Breast Center is an important step to helping you live a healthy life.

South Sound Radiology’s Position on Mammograms

2014-04-22 22:33:49 diventare-creative

April 18, 2014

In recent years, there have been many articles questioning the value of screening mammography starting at age 40. These articles garner publicity and confuse everyone, health care providers and the public alike, regarding the efficacy of screening for breast cancer.

Most recently, a Canadian study published in the February 11, 2014 edition of the British Medical Journal reported that screening mammography offers no life-saving benefit for women. The study actually has little relevance to today’s mammography. It is derived from data obtained from mammograms taken mainly in the 1980s when mammography was still in its infancy.

Lawrence Bennett, MD, Chief of Women’s Imaging at South Sound Radiology, is concerned that flawed studies like this one will lead women to believe that annual mammography exams are no longer significant nor life-saving.

“When you review the mammographic literature, it is important to review the paper critically but also to understand when and how the imaging was performed,” Dr. Bennett said. “Breast imaging is now digital with greatly improved resolution – the Canadian study was performed with early screen film mammography, an outdated technique.”

Dr. Bennett advises clinicians to encourage their female patients to follow established recommendations.

The American Cancer Society’s guidelines which state that women over age 40 should get a mammogram once a year, are sound,” Dr. Bennett said. “At South Sound Radiology, we find twice as many cancers through screening mammography than the Canadian study claimed to find, and we are more likely to detect them early in women who have regular mammograms.”

South Sound Radiology firmly supports annual mammography screening beginning at age 40.
